Discernment Part I
Last month I spoke of introspection—a skill difficult to categorize without also developing the skill of discernment. Discernment is defined as the ability to distinguish, to recognize and to separate one thing from another in such a way that you see the core of it—the truth of it—mentally or with the senses.
Discerning the different elements that make up a situation and where they came from is key to making good judgements. The first step is to recognize what is colored by perception vs. what is really there (reality). This can be influenced by emotions, health, motivations, past experiences, people you consider important, social environment, philosophy, spiritual beliefs, and inner Knowing. Perceptions in turn influence your judgement, reactions, and actions. Think of a situation that you wish could have done differently. Discern what motivations and perceptions existed for you then by analyzing what influenced them. Then, look at what you said and the actions you took as a result of them. Compare what you know now to what you knew then. Was there something that you were blinding yourself to? Why? Be perfectly honest. Being able to discern the difference is how you can gain wisdom. It allows you to make better decisions for the future. Keeping a journal to record all of this will help to act as a reference when you need it.
The information you have just gained will assist you in weighing similar situations in the future. You can then decide if and how to become involved so things come to a better conclusion. But what if even after all of this you still are confused, or things seem overwhelming? Then give yourself credit for recognizing that you need help. Not making anything harder than it has to be is one of the forms of showing self love and self respect. List what areas that you feel you need assistance. Seek compassionate people who truly can be objective and who will not be swayed by you. People who only have your greater good at heart should be considered. This includes professionals as well as people whom you trust. Research unbiased information that can give you insight, and be open to what you find.
Discernment is a skill that you can hone only if you are willing to work at it. Discernment will bring you depth of understanding of your current situations and clarity on how to make things better in the future under your present circumstances.
