Imagination: Part I
Albert Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the whole world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” It is limitless and like life itself it always finds a way to come into being. Many people think that imagination merely is a mental place of whimsy and useless fantasy. It is often thought of as a place of childish pursuits or of escape for those who cannot cope or function in “real life”. This could not be farther from the truth.
Imagination is a gift–a god-like Power, for it is boundless and allows for ideas and manifestations to endure through time. Because of this, it should be cultivated carefully by exercising it just as you would your body. For example, humankind probably has had the universal desire to fly since first appearing upon Earth Mother. Imagination played an important part in the manifestation of a form of transportation that we take for granted today– the airplane. Imagination is how our conscious minds are able to envision. It was the combination of observation, applying facts in a new way, plus envisioning the designs of flying machines so that they could be fabricated that allowed the Wright brothers finally to succeed and to usher in a new age of flight. . In everyday life we imagine how to complete tasks at work, or how a conversation with another may go. This becomes especially evident when you ponder how to leave a lasting positive impression even more so if it is to last beyond your lifetime.
Imagination is thought of as a strictly mental phenomena, but it is so much more! It is the mechanism that allows our conscious selves to go beyond our five senses, and a window where our brains can perceive other realms of reality so our minds may ponder them. It is how your conscious self can “see” where your spirit is traveling or has been when you go on a shamanic Journey. Imagination is how our physical selves can anticipate what the future may bring by correctly interpreting what messages you receive, regardless of the place from which it came.
Like a powerful and wild horse, imagination needs proper handling to serve you well. This ability has no bounds, nor discernment. Here’s how best to avoid your imagination “running off” with you.
1) Be in the right frame of mind emotionally, and leveled and centered. Imagination amplifies what it touches, so check often that things are not blown out of proportion.
2) Set parameters of what you’re trying to accomplish. It is true that imagination needs to have some freedom to evoke new ideas. However, unchecked flights of fancy may spiral too far off course from your original intention to be useful.
3) Your environment affects your mood which in turn affects our creativity. Pay special attention to who and what is around you.
4) Create a routine that will trigger your imagination. Routines can put you in the right frame of mind and mood to focus on accomplishing anything. Routines can become second nature like those we use to get up in the morning or before we go to bed at night.
Imagination is a window beyond the time and space of the present moment. Coupled with proper action it is how we can move beyond the limitations of where we are and go to where we’ve never been before.
