PLEASE Follow the CDC Guidelines!

I can feel the growing tension and anxiety as more people learn in the state of Pennsylvania that we must continue strict social distancing practices until April 30th. This restriction not only pertains to my state, but throughout the entire United States. I know it can be very difficult for many of us, as we are not used to this alien way of being. I beg of you to be patient and persevere.

I have been in volunteer stay-at-home isolation since March 8th. I go out only for necessities, and if the weather permits, to go walking at a local park that has ample space to avoid close contact with other people. What astonishes me is how many people choose to ignore what is being asked of us. Although I can appreciate this is a hardship that can make anyone feel isolated and claustrophobic, I cannot help but feel both empathetic yet annoyed at the same time. Ignoring guidelines that are given to us by the CDC merely guarantees that this uncomfortable way of living, of being separated from our loved ones and our livelihoods, can be extended for several more weeks or months! I know that none of us want this. Nor, do we want accidentally to carry or contract COVID–19. By cooperating, you are doing so much more than just slowing down the spread of the sickness! When you follow the guidelines, you help essential personnel working on the front lines. They are exhausted and overworked already.  When you stay at home and comply with health guidelines (and are courteous) when you absolutely need to go out, this lessens their stress about their safety and that of their families and allows them to breathe a little bit more easily.

In these coming weeks it may be difficult not to succumb to becoming more depressed or negative. Remember that you still can communicate with your loved ones and you still have access to professionals who can help you. By keeping talk realistic and sharing positive thoughts and actions you are effective in the fight against the byproduct of the Corona virus,  which is that of loneliness and anxiety.

Use this valuable time to reflect on the direction that you would like your life to go once we are allowed back into the normal routines of everyday life. Think about and talk about how the work-arounds that been implemented and now allow us work from home, can become the “new norm” going forth into the future. Here we are seeing what parts within our healthcare system, our government, and other institutions are either over-extended or broken. Instead of complaining about them or pointing out the obvious, talk amongst yourselves and those who are in these respective professions. Discuss how we can reform or overhaul these institutions and the steps that must be taken. In this way, this extra month of retreat and repose can become vibrant with meaning and the enthusiasm of being able to put into action the plans that were made during this time of quiet.

I do miss seeing everyone, but because I do care and wish to see all of you in good health, I will respect and continue to follow the CDC guidelines. I want to give all of us a better chance to stay healthy. I hope you will do the same for me and for those in your communities. If we all do our part, then this period of isolation will come to an end sooner versus later. I wish all of you and your loved ones safety, good vibes, and health.
